“Reminiscent of photographers like Alfred Stieglitz and Henri Cartier-Bresson, Charles Allan Smith captures his subjects at angles and perspectives that he states, “others may overlook.” He observes that “the simplest things we may take for granted” are where he finds beauty. His use of repetitive shapes and patterns in his compositions reinforce his ability to recognize the visual relationship between forms, both natural and man-made. Through his unique approach to black and white photography, Smith captures the mood and tone of his composition. Some of the photographs displayed here show striking forms, enhanced by strong contrasts of light and shadow. In other works, his subtle tones provide an almost ethereal effect. The photographs in this series capture many of the beautiful places Smith has traveled, including Bali, Israel, Barcelona, Venice, New York, Cuba, Paris and The Bahamas.”
